Description
Phulia, a small weaving town in West Bengal, has long been known for its fine handloom sarees in cotton and raw silk. It is here that master-weaver Ramanand Basak took on an extraordinary task — to interpret the works of Rabindranath Tagore, Nobel laureate and one of India's greatest cultural icons, through the language of the loom.
Tagore was not only a poet and writer. He sketched constantly — birds, faces, doodles, abstract forms — many of them drawn alongside the poems he was writing. Ramanand Basak studied these sketches and wove them into his sarees, bringing Tagore's visual world into the fabric itself.
The collaboration was completed by Khamabati Karmakar, a skilled embroiderer known for her kantha work. Kantha is one of Bengal's oldest embroidery traditions, combining the running stitch with satin stitch to create floral, geometric, and figurative patterns. Khamabati stitched Tagore's own words — lines from his poems — directly onto the woven saree, in the same hand-drawn spirit in which they were first written.
About this piece
This blue saree carries two of Tagore's works.
The bird you see embroidered on the saree was first drawn by Tagore in a notebook during his visit to Buenos Aires in 1924. It accompanied a poem that opens with hey bideshi phul — "O foreign flower" — and closes with the word prabhat, meaning "dawn." Khamabati has recreated this bird in needle and thread with quiet precision.
The saree also carries lines from Tagore's poem Chadibhati ("Picnic"), written in 1937, embroidered in running stitch alongside the woven imagery.
One detail worth noting: the bird and human face were woven in reverse — quite unintentionally — by Ramanand Basak. It is one of those rare moments where a small accident becomes part of the story.
This is the exhibit piece, now available for sale. Only one piece exists.
